Bottom line: buy the test, not the logo
NETZSCH Trockenmahltechnik GmbH does not need my approval to be a serious company. But every dry grinding system does need one acceptance test before it earns a place on your plant floor. That test is what separates a machine that makes powder from a machine that makes promises.
The acceptance test with your own material is the only specification that matters. Brand reputation, German engineering, and well-polished case studies all mean something, but they don’t guarantee your d90, your throughput, or your contamination limit.
I’m the quality/compliance manager at a processing company that specifies mills for food, chemical, and battery-material projects. I review roughly 70–90 commissioning dossiers a year, about half of them dry grinding systems. In 2024 I rejected about 12% of the first submissions that crossed my desk. Mostly missing paperwork, unclear tolerances, or wear parts that didn’t match the quoted alloy.
That experience hasn’t made me cynical about NETZSCH. It made me more careful.
What changed how I evaluate NETZSCH mills
In March 2023, we received a mill from another supplier that ran beautifully on the vendor’s silica test powder. On our actual talc product, it blocked within forty minutes. The vendor said the problem was “product variability.” The real problem was that we had accepted a test based on the wrong material.
I didn’t fully understand the value of as-built clearance checks until that batch. Now every purchase order includes rotor-stator gap tolerances, material certificates, and a no-deviation clause.
That is also why I put NETZSCH Trockenmahltechnik on the shortlist for dry-grinding projects. Not because they’re perfect, but because their application engineers usually ask the right questions before they offer a machine. At least, that has been my experience on both laboratory trials and full-scale installations.
In Portuguese-speaking markets, customers use the term “netzsch moagem” to describe the same dry grinding and dispersing process. The language changes; the engineering standard should not. I apply the same acceptance rules whether a machine comes with a German manual, a Portuguese manual, or both.
The checks I run on every NETZSCH dry-grinding system
These are not corporate quality guidelines. These are the checks that caught real problems before they became expensive downtime.
1. Run the factory acceptance test on your product, not theirs
I insist on a factory acceptance test, or FAT, with a representative sample of the material I plan to grind. Not silica. Not a “similar” powder. The actual product.
The FAT must include target d50, d90, and throughput with agreed tolerances. If you don’t set tolerances, the test is just a demonstration. A NETZSCH trial mill in their application lab is useful, but it only matters if the conditions mirror your process.
2. Verify the as-built rotor and classifier clearances
I’ve seen new mills delivered with a rotor gap that was 0.3 mm larger than the drawing. The machine still ran, but it changed the particle size curve. For an impact classifier mill, the gap between the grinding track and the classifier wheel is not a minor adjustment. It changes the product.
NETZSCH’s own quality drawings usually hold tighter tolerances, but “usually” is not an acceptance criterion. Put the numbers in the purchase order.
3. Confirm the material of construction in writing
Stainless steel is not one material. If you are processing foods, you may need a specific surface finish. If you are grinding abrasive minerals, you need wear protection in the right zones.
I ask for material certificates for every wetted part. I’ve rejected deliveries, not because the equipment was bad, but because the certificate didn’t match the spec. That sounds bureaucratic until you replace a wear liner after three weeks.
4. Look at the classifier’s speed curve, not just one test point
A dry grinding system is really a mill plus a classifier. The classifier speed controls the final fineness. If you buy an NETZSCH system, ask for a curve showing d50 and d90 at three different classifier speeds. That curve tells you more about flexibility than the marketing brochure.
5. Check the safety and dust explosion concept
For organic powders, dry grinding creates dust explosion risk. The system should be designed to ATEX or your local equivalent. That means pressure shock resistance, explosion relief, or inert gas blanketing.
“ATEX” is not a checkbox. Define the zone and the protection strategy before you sign. A mill is a Process Hazard Analysis recommendation waiting to happen if you don’t.
6. Make sure the service engineer will take your call
This matters more for smaller companies than anyone admits. We once placed a small laboratory-scale NETZSCH trial order before scaling up. The application engineer treated our 20-kg sample like it mattered. That experience made the difference when we later ordered the production mill.
Small orders are not an excuse for lower service quality. I’ve been ignored by suppliers because my order was “too small to be profitable.” NETZSCH wasn’t one of them. That is worth a lot in a capital equipment relationship.
Where NETZSCH Trockenmahltechnik is not the perfect answer
I’m not going to pretend that a dry grinding mill solves every size-reduction problem. It doesn’t.
If your product is sticky, oily, or very heat-sensitive, a dry grinding system can behave differently from a wet grinding system. Trockenmahltechnik literally means dry grinding technology. For wet applications, you would normally look at a different NETZSCH division or a different process altogether.
Also, if your plant does not have clean, dry compressed air and a stable electrical supply, you need to budget for those utilities. The mill might be excellent, but site integration costs can surprise you.
And if you are aiming for particles below one micron in a single pass, you may need a jet mill rather than a mechanical impact mill. Both options exist within the NETZSCH Trockenmahltechnik portfolio, but not every machine can do everything.
What I’d tell a smaller buyer looking at NETZSCH dry grinding
Do not let order size change your quality standards.
Start with a laboratory-scale trial. Ask for the test report in writing, including feed analysis, operating parameters, and final particle size distribution. If a supplier says they don’t do trials for new customers, that tells you exactly how they will treat you after the sale.
NETZSCH has application centers where you can run a small batch. That trial is not a waste of money. In our case, the trial cost a few thousand euros and saved us from a seven-figure mistake. So glad we did it.
Oh, and one more thing: ask for calibration certificates for the particle size analyzer used during the FAT. If they measure particle size according to ISO 13320, they should be able to show you the reference material traceability. If the numbers can’t be traced, the beautiful particle size curve is not worth much.
Bottom line: buy the test, not the logo
NETZSCH Trockenmahltechnik GmbH makes excellent dry grinding and classifying systems. I would recommend them for many applications—especially when the product is abrasive, the target fineness is demanding, and the buyer wants a long-term service relationship.
But the equipment is only as good as the specification behind it. Run the trial. Confirm the tolerance. Check the safety concept. Treat the brochure as a starting point, not as an acceptance document.
That’s the approach that has kept rejection rates low and plant operators happy. And it applies whether you’re buying a laboratory mill or a complete NETZSCH production line.
