Single-Use vs. Stainless Steel Bioprocess Pumps: A Buyer’s Comparison After Choosing NETZSCH

The Two Options I Was Asked to Compare

I’m not a process engineer. I’m the office administrator at an 85-person specialty compound manufacturer. I manage facility, lab, and service purchasing—roughly $260,000 a year across 35 vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. When our project team asked me to help evaluate pumps for a new bioprocess line, my first reaction was to say no. But most of the decision was about purchasing, not pump curves.

The team gave me two paths to compare:

  • Path A: a reusable stainless steel pump using the existing cleaning infrastructure.
  • Path B: a NETZSCH bioprocess & single-use path with disposable product-contacting parts.

Let me be clear about the setup. The stainless steel pump quote came from a separate, established pump supplier. The single-use system came from NETZSCH, which has a product line called NETZSCH bioprocess & single-use. NETZSCH Germany’s application engineers supplied the technical documentation. I’m not writing this to claim one brand is universally better. I’m writing about the buying comparison because the differences only showed up once I stopped looking at the equipment price.

Why I Used a Buyer’s Comparison Framework

It’s tempting to think you can compare two pump options by asking for quotes and checking which number is lower. That ignores the parts that produce surprises: freight, installation, changeover downtime, cleaning validation, consumables, and the cost of fixing a problem later.

So I built the comparison around four dimensions:

  1. Price transparency, because hidden fees are the real cost.
  2. Turnaround and cleaning, because downtime is a hidden schedule risk.
  3. Waste and environmental claims, because saying green is different from showing green.
  4. Support and documentation, because I’m the person who gets called when a certificate is missing.

The evaluation took about six weeks. I normally prefer at least three quotes for purchases over $50,000, but the “always get three quotes” advice has a flaw: it ignores the evaluation cost. After two rounds of calls, we had enough information. A third quote probably would have told us which supplier had the best website, not which pump would cost less to operate.

Dimension 1: Price Transparency

The first clue came from the quote formats. The stainless steel quote showed a bare pump skid price. Installation, freight, spare parts, and first-year maintenance were listed as “optional.” When I asked about cleaning validation support, the salesperson said it would be quoted after a detailed process review. That might sound normal, but it also means the number you approve is not the number you will pay.

The NETZSCH quote was formatted differently. It had line items for the pump drive, the single-use flow path, control system, freight, startup support, training, and a separate section for consumables. The total looked higher at first. Actually, it looked about $22,000 higher than the stainless steel quote. But it was a more honest number because I knew what it included. The stainless steel option needed at least one more quote before we could compare the same scope.

Most buyers focus on equipment price. The question I now ask is not “what’s your best price?” It’s “what’s the price after installation, freight, consumables, training, and documentation?” If a vendor refuses to answer that clearly, that’s a red flag.

One small example: if you want to send a first-class letter, you can look up the USPS price. According to USPS (usps.com), a one-ounce First-Class Mail letter costs $0.73 as of January 2025. There is no hidden handling fee. Industrial freight is more complicated than a stamp, but a vendor can still give a reasonable estimate before the PO. The NETZSCH quote did. The other quote said “freight TBD.” That difference told me a lot.

Dimension 2: Turnaround and Cleaning

The engineering argument for single-use is simple: no cleaning between batches. You remove the flow path, bag it, and install a new one. With stainless steel, the pump and piping need to be cleaned in place and then proven clean. That is not just a few hours of labor. It includes documentation, swab tests, and batch release review.

The part I did not expect was this: the NETZSCH single-use advantage was smaller for our first product. We planned to run one formulation for most of the first year. A stainless steel pump that gets cleaned and reused is fine when changeovers are infrequent. The time savings were real, but not enough to justify the consumable cost for that first product alone.

It’s also tempting to think single-use removes all cleaning. It doesn’t remove the batch record. We still tracked lot numbers, verified flow path integrity, and confirmed pressure before each run. It was simpler, not paperwork-free.

The equation changed when we added a second, short-run clinical product. Then the validation burden doubled. With stainless steel, every product changeover required the full cleaning protocol again. With single-use, the new pump head came with its own documentation, and changeover took hours instead of days. At that point, the choice became obvious.

Dimension 3: Waste and Environmental Claims

I started this dimension biased against single-use. It feels wasteful. But feelings are not a carbon footprint. Stainless steel requires hot water, caustic, acid, and energy to clean every time. It can also require large volumes of rinse water. Single-use creates more plastic waste. The honest answer is that neither option is automatically greener. It depends on batch size, product changeovers, and what actually happens to the waste.

This is where green claims need scrutiny. According to the FTC’s Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims must be substantiated. A product labeled “recyclable” should be recyclable in communities where at least 60% of consumers have access to recycling programs. Many single-use bioprocess components are not commonly recycled. So when a supplier says “fully recyclable,” I ask for the collection partner and facility locations.

The NETZSCH single-use proposal did not oversell. It listed a waste stream and disposal plan, and it avoided vague environmental slogans. That may sound like a small thing, but it made me trust the quote more.

Dimension 4: Documentation and the “NETZSCH Germany” Factor

If someone had asked me before this project whether “NETZSCH Germany” mattered, I would have said yes. German engineering has a strong reputation. But reputation is not a technical spec. What actually mattered was the paper trail.

NETZSCH sent documents with clear part numbers, material certificates, maintenance intervals, and an operating manual that did not hide behind vague language. The stainless steel pump supplier also sent technical data, but I had to chase down certificates across multiple emails. That might sound like an administrative pet peeve, but it becomes a real problem later. When a quality auditor asks for a document, you can’t reply “the sales rep said it exists.”

I also learned that manufacturer location matters less than local service. The NETZSCH team arranged a discussion with an application engineer who asked about viscosity, temperature, solids content, and batch size before recommending anything. The conversation felt like problem-solving, not pitching. That is the kind of support that helps a project stay on budget.

Which Option Would I Buy Again?

We approved the NETZSCH bioprocess & single-use package for the new pilot line. We kept the stainless steel pump for the established production line. I would make the same call today, but not because one technology beat the other in every dimension.

  • Choose the single-use path if: you switch products often, your facility has limited cleaning capacity, or you need shorter validation cycles.
  • Choose a stainless steel path if: you run long campaigns, already have validated cleaning procedures, or need higher flow rates that make stainless steel more economical.
  • Remove a vendor from consideration if: it won’t separate capital cost from installation, consumables, freight, and service. That kind of quote isn’t competitive. It’s incomplete.

Bottom line: single-use won for our pilot line, but not by a knockout. It won on transparency and changeover flexibility. The stainless steel option wasn’t a bad technology—it was a bad quote. The NETZSCH quote made the true first-year cost visible. The other quote looked cheaper because important costs were missing. We all know what happens when important costs are missing on a capital project. They show up later, and the person who signed the PO gets to explain it.

I don’t need my vendors to be perfect. I need them to be clear. That clarity is worth real money.
